PROJECT VTOL-EGM

A joint project by OptoPrecision GmbH, b.r.m. business resource management Technology and Management Consulting and theInstitute for Environmental Physics at the University of Bremen. As part of the project, an „unmanned airborne vehicle“ (UAV) for efficient environmental monitoring is being developed. This makes it possible to get to the source of the pollution and carry out direct measurements. This will be used to monitor ship emissions. Since January 1, 2015, there has been a limit of 0.1% for the sulfur content in ship fuel in the SECA zone in the North and Baltic Sea areas. The VTOL-EGM project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The VTOL-EGM project is funded by:

ROBUST VTOL UAV for challenging operations in all wheather conditions

Product features

  • Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL)
  • No infrastructure required on the ground
  • Modular payload concept
  • Automatic flight
  • Range extender with a range of up to 600 km
  • Anti-icing and gust load reduction
  • Payload volume of 75 liters with 12 kg acceptable weight
  • ADS-B and remote ID
  • GNSS RTK for centimeter-accurate appliations
  • Operation towards the ground through low and contour

OptoPrecision’s unmanned drone VT-4 is a robust CFRP high-performance aircraft capable of vertical take-off
anhanced with a hybrid drive. The VT-4 was designed for long flight times at low altitudes. A basic requirement was to be able to take off and land without the infrastructure of an airfield. Therefore the VT-4 has the characteristics of a

VTOL (Vertical Take-off and Landing). Further features are:
    • A long range on basis of level plane flight and range extender (hybrid drive)
    • Bad weather resilience with anti-icing function
    • Active two-stage geofencing
    • Flight out of sight (BVLOS)
    • Fully automated flight

The UAV features two radio links as standard configuration. The radio link in the C-band enables the transmission of large data streams from the payload (up to 500 Mbit /s). The separate telemetry connection allows safe control over long ranges.

    Flight characterics

The properties of the system enable reliable flight due to the gliding properties. Thanks to the integrated auxiliary power unit, a flight time of up to 6 hours is achieved. With a travel speed of 160 km / h, the VT-4 enables the acomplishment of the most demanding missions with a flight path of up to 600 km.

    Payload

Thanks to the innovative, modular payload concept, the VT-4 aircraft can be equipped with a wide variety of payloads, depending on the mission. Application examples are the collection of gas samples or the evaluation of flight or observation missions with the innovative, optical systems from OptoPrecision (e.g. shallow water inspections).

    Ground station

    Ground station includes:

    • The control station with workstations for the FPIL (remote pilot) and the payload operator
    • The data transfer between the control station and the aircraft
    • Refueling and defuelling system as well as charging station for the batteries
    • Transport and maintenance facility

The ground station enables mobility on the street and thus the quick relocation of the entire system. The UAV is transported with the wings folded up. Folding of the outer wings can be achieved in a very short time by one person without any additionial tools.

For loading and unloading the drone, a loading crane with telescopic extension was integrated into the trailer, with the help of which the drone can be lifted at four points.
